In the course of conducting research, investigators may develop intellectual property that has potential for commercialization. The process of commercialization can take many different forms, and one way is for the inventors of the intellectual property to form a company. These companies are often referred to as "faculty start-ups" or "start-up."

UI Ventures and the Office of the Vice President for Research have staff that can assist with this process. However, it is important to understand and emphasize that creating a company can also create new financial conflicts of interest with respect to research conducted at the University.
