Section 6002 of the Affordable Care Act requires the establishment of a transparency program, known as Open Payments. The program increases public awareness through transparency of financial relationships between drug and device manufacturers and certain health care providers.

Open Payments requires pharmaceutical manufacturers and medical device companies to disclose financial relationships with healthcare providers. The publicly accessible site shows payments, transfers of value and ownership/investment interests held by individual providers and teaching hospitals.

CMS collects the data annually, aggregates it, and publishes it on its public website. Individuals may appeal what is reported each year.

The University's Conflict of Interest in Research Office may use to data published on the Open Payments database to crosscheck disclosures reported to the institution by individuals. Questions about this process may be directed to the Conflict of Interest in Research Office
